30 August, 2010

Kragerø, Norway. Next month will be a crazy travel time for me. Will be back in Berlin, USA and in Denmark. I'm gearing up with inspiration about my next travels with a Danish film called The Red Chapel. It's a documnetary about these two Danish/Korean comedians and a film producer who travel to North Korea as a cultural exchange thearter project. It's a great film, bizarre and entertaining. Just had to mention it.

27 August , 2010

Kragerø, Norway. So me and Glen the Kitchen King made a visit to a local publication for some promotion. Very nice people over there at Kragerø's Blad Vestmar, the piece will run on Saturday. Photo and story by Jimmy, KV newspaper. • I had some free time during the days here at the hotel so I've been renting movies to pass the time. One good film was a documentary called Hitler, A Career and a not so great concert film was Norah Jones live in Nashville. She is a great songwriter, singer but this film was made early in her career and it shows that her live gig was not totally developed yet. At one point, she was blown off the stage by Dolly Parton.

16 August, 2010

Gothenburg, Sweden. My last band in the USA was called The Put-Ons. I'm happy cause I just found that our last album we made, Schooldays In Disgrace, is now on sale at iTunes and soon on Spotify. By the way, Spotify is a pretty cool online music streaming platform available in Scandinavia and in some countries around Europe. It's free with limited play time and commercials or for a monthly fee you can listen unlimited without adverts. • I'm in one of my fave cities right now, love this place, wonderful. Will be visiting friends, taking care of some music business and enjoying chill time before I head up to Norway to work at Kragerø. When I got here yesterday, there was a festival thoughout the whole city with live music and dancing in the streets. How cool is that? Why can't we ever have fun stuff like this in LA?

3 August

Malmö, Sweden. I need to mention this gig cause it's special: Gallagher's Pub in Huntington Beach, California on Saturday, Sept. 18. Will get a chance to catch up with friends and family. The really fun part is that some longtime musician buddies will join me with the music. The Put-Ons and Scarecrow's drummer, Mike Petrus will be keeping beat for me and Luis Oliart. Luis was my first ever bass player dating back a million years ago to Jr. High School.

24 July

Malmö, Sweden. Had a great time in Gothenburg, now resting and visiting friends in Malmö. This weekend there is a festival called Möllevångsfestivalen. I wanted to travel around on a little summer tour but it's been too warm to be productive. • Something old something new. While I was in Norway, I got an album by The Drums. First heard 'bout them early this year, catchy tunes, good song writing. And recently I've been listening to Steve Miller Band. I've always known his music was classic rock radio fodder but I never realized how great the songs were are or how many hit singles they produced. Great music. • Some of my music releases and bands like Scarecrows, The Put-Ons can be found at a cool streaming music portal called Spotify. It's a Scandinavian company so it's not popular in the States. But I realized thats it's big news in Sweden/Norway.

17 June, 2010

Stabbestad, Norway. I went into town today, Kragerø, took the ferry. Boats are abundant here, necessary because we are on the coast with many fjords. By the way, a fjord is a long and narrow inlet of sea between high cliffs. Anyway's, I learned today that this town, Kragerø, was once home to an important resident named Edvard Munch (1863-1944). A famous Norwegian painter, Munch also had a strong connection to Germany when he lived in Berlin for many years. He was considered the Father of Expressionism art and is most famous for his work The Scream. They also put his face on a 1000 crown Norwegian bill. But I've never seen one up close because, despite my "millionaire" appearance, I don't ever have so much money.

7 June

Kragerø, Norway. The view is amazing from the top of this hill, overlooking the docks and water, the town is cute with little red wooden houses. It's a fjord, kinda like an Island land mass that sticks out. • I gotta mention Gothenburg, what a great time I had visiting Ingela and friends. Made new friends and discovered a great place to jam at Incontro. It's stylish and the people there were lovely, chill, fun to party with. Can't wait to get back and play more music with Lisa Ljungberg. • Gotta give props to Raija in Turku, what a sweetheart. Hey guys, if I forget to mention your name or can't reply a text, it's cause I'm traveling, very busy and in another world. You know I'm thinking about you.

12 June

Gothenburg, Sweden. Last spring we did an interview for a Malmö university magazine called Mahskara, me and Ditte. It was fun. Also got to work with a talented and reputable photographer in Sweden called Kristian Gullner. He is famous for his live music shots and editorial images. And a really cool guy to work with. To the left are just a few images captured from this project. • Last night, got a chance to jam with a Gothenburg singer-songwriter named Lisa Ljungberg. What a great voice and exciting entertainer. Was a fun gig at a restaurant/piano bar called Incontro, a bit posh but actually real down-to-earth. I've said it before, I love coming to Sweden because the quality of the Pop music standard is so high. • Before I forget, gotta give props to Turku, Tuula, the crew at Merihelmi, Jari and Elif, all the Finnish music lovers I met. Had a great time. Thanks people. • Having a nice time here in Gothenburg with Ingela and friends, I have high spirits, that's why this entry is so positive.

10 June

Gothenburg, Sweden. I try to keep it chill here and not write negative things or too much complaining but I just got to warn you about Crazy Heart. The film sucks, didn't even make through till the end. I was jazzed before I got into it cause I'm a fan of The Big Lebowski and Jeff Bridges. Crazy Heart is slow, does not seem to have much of a plot except for the troubled boy-meets girl formula. It's cliche, unoriginal and just plain boring. There's even a scene where the guy is talking in a phone booth on the side of some lone highway. Can't believe he won an Oscar for this but not for Lebowski. • In in one of my fave cities in Sweden, Gothenburg. The weather is shite but its still so pretty to look at. I heard Johnny Thunders was living here once when he had a Swedish girlfriend, long time ago. • Cafe Centro was my fave spot for a cup of joe until yesterday, eneded up with a major stomach ache after a visit there.

7 June

Stockholm, Sweden. Shake those buns now mama. Yes, Euromilf galore here on this cruise ship. Just left Finland and I can't quite concentrate on anything while walking around this big ferry. You know, when you're as spontaneous as me while traveling around, some things just don't go as planned. So you just gotta hold on for dear life and enjoy the ride. After all, doesn't last forever. The joy ride I mean. A cool guy I was hangin' out with in Turku called it "courage", I call it many years of working in front of a computer getting restless. What am I talking about? I don't know, just can't explain it here. Nobody's business but my own, I guess. • Hello Sweden, you are so beautiful and stylish. Looking forward to the tastes and smells and sounds. Hope we get good weather this week, really helps to be a people person while traveling 'round trying to get things done.

26 May

Turku, Finland. I try not to stereotype but there is a big difference between the Fins and the Swedes. I'm having a little easier time making friends here, they seem to be a bit more chill and easy to relate to. But they are also good at making rock music. • Turku is a wonderfully cozy town. Well, they say it's a city. Some here think that American's don't know where Finland is on the map. But I think some folks in the US are quite familiar with Hanoi Rocks, Him, Children of Bodom and professional Finnish ice hockey players. • I'm playing nightly on a cool cafe boat parked in the river running through town. Having a swell time, so far so good. Really nice people.

25 May

Stockholm, Sweden. On the train ride here, met a drummer from a band called Gabby and the Guns. Don't know much about them, so many musicians, so many bands. The Swedes are good at making rock music. • Saw a good friend during my stay here, nice to reconnect with important relationships while traveling. I've known Swedish Åsa from many years ago when she was living in Huntington Beach. • One of the many things that sticks in my mind about Stockholm, besides that it's a great city, is the nature so close to the city center. Love it.

22 May

Lund, Sweden. Lund Carnival. It's an old town, basically a university spot, so the fest was arranged by students. Live music, food, parade, drunken party and fun times. I didn't party much but was having a great time and making special connections. Saw a guy get up on stage named Timbuktu. I think Lund would be a nice place to live for a while.

18 May

Malmö, Sweden. Just can't shake this scowl from my face, been there for a couple weeks. Thought a trip to Sweden would do the trick. Guess its just going to take some time. Maybe some traveling, visiting friends and playing gigs will help. • Got some new shows coming up, will post the dates to the left as they near.

17 May, 2010

Berlin, Germany. Just wanna give a shout-out to Anef, an artisit in Berlin. Great designs and fun stuff to see. I'm inspired. Any bands or musicians who need some images or work done, should contact Anef. Graphics recomended.

15 May, 2010

Berlin, Germany. I left a good deal of my music collection back in California. So, it's been a while since I've heard some Led Zeppelin. And just let me say this: Oh shit, those guys rocked! Haven't really had a chance to give it a good listen for years. Been busy trying to catch the latest thing or new up-in-comer. So it's nice once in a while to reflect with the classics. I remember at a point in my life when I thought Zep was not cool. What was i thinking? As an artist, I can now really appreciate the original and creative genius these guys pulled of in such a short time, before the tragic end of the drummers death. My pics while reviewing their catalogue are, Ramble On, Tangerine, The Rain Song, D'yer Mak'er, Houses of the Holy and Fool in the Rain.

6 May, 2010

Berlin, Germany. The weather is nice here in Berlin but its cold. Me and Olga went out for a simple photoshoot and ended up at a dog park. I posted some pics at my Facebook public photos music page. I was tired and not feelin' it and she was worried that dogs would pee on her gear, so we ended the day early but managed to get a few shots worth keeping. • Thought I was going to be spending more time at home in Berlin this year but once again, life's unpredictable ways has me out wondering the world. I will be touring around most of the summer for music. Next stop: Malmö, Sweden. Another nice place on the coast of Norway where I will be, click on the little landscape pic to the left for a big view. Norwegian nature can be beautiful in the summer. Really looking forward to it.

4 May 2010

Berlin, Germany. A new song I wrote, filmed last week. "Promises", working demo video. It's not a Burt Bacharach cover.

3 May, 2010

Berlin, Germany. I keep forgetting to mention a good Danish film I've seen lately on DVD called Frygtelig lykkelig (Terribly Happy), based on a novel by Erling Jepsen, The story takes place in a small town in the Danish farmland of Jutland. It's about a bad cop who is banished to work in community where dark secrets lurk. There's a great storyline with some sex, violence and a twist ending. Recomended. • Sometimes, when I am able to elude nights of partying and drinking, I manage to get myself to a nice cafe in Berlin on Saturday/Sunday mornings. The place is called Dante and it's in the city center at a historic location. During the summer, especially on the weekends, there is street performances and open air markets there. It's a bit touristy but its okay for playing my music outside while people shop and dine. Here is the Facebook page for Hackescher Markt/Cafe Dante.

29 April, 2010

Berlin, Germany. Hi folks! I was trippin' earlier this week, but I'm a bit more fit now. I just got the new John Mayer album, Battle Studies. Pretty good stuff. But actually I like the Richard Cheese & Lounge Against The Machine release better, Viva La Vodka (Live), haha! The guy is my new hero, wish he'd tour Europe.

28 April 2010

Berlin, Germany. Here's a new song in the works and a demo video that we made last week. It's called "Useless". One of these days I'll put together a full band for my original tunes.

17 April, 2010

Berlin, Germany. Been listening to an old CD I re-found from my last trip to California, it's a great one: Sly and the Family Stone Anthology. Sly Stone is playing tomorrow at Coachella Music and Arts Festival in California. What a great song writer, musician, producer. I could go on with lots of words about this group. So sad that I am missing this gig. Been waiting for years to see him play, a reclusive guy who went into retirement years ago. These days, he makes only rare appearances. His band made many hit songs and went on to pioneer a funk rock style that is still a standard sound today. In the early 60s, he was the first rock artist to mix ethinicity into a group. Besides all that, their songs rock! They played Woodstock and headlined Madison Square Garden for God sakes. I can't believe I'm missing such a rare opportunity. Check out the vintage Youtube footage below of a live Family Stone TV performance.

12 April 2010

Berlin, Germany. Here's an older song from last year that I am trying to revive in a live band format. More info to follow about new music projects. "Somebody Like You".

6 April 2010

Berlin, Germany. Back in town, working on new songs. again. "High On The Beat". I made a new song and filmed a demo version while in Herning, Denmark last week. The drum loop is a beat i made in Garage Band and put on my iPod. Gearing up for some full rock stuff.

12 March, 2010

Berlin, Germany. Much of these last couple months have been spent in Sweden. There is so much to see and do there. I'll be going back soon. Recently I have been discovering interesting things there like wooden forks, California made beer and frozen rats on the sidewalk (Kate, you missed it!). Seriously, the nature and cities are amazing. Including the Scandinavian design sense I love so much and the music scene. It's been nice to build on my friendships I've made recently. And thanks to Facebook, discovering lost ones (hi Andreas!). By the way, I've added some random pics from my last couple months travel/gigs to my public photos folder. I'm glad to take time for this area, the days have been fantastic: watching local bands, playing at coffee houses and pubs, snowboarding, dancing to traditional swedish goofy songs, giging at the ski resort, playing in the snow, hanging at the university. I even went to a wedding convention in Malmö.

7 March, 2010

Berlin, Germany. I recently finished a book, (yes, I sometimes read books) called Tony Visconti, Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy about a great rock n' roll producer who has worked with many acts including Thin Lizzy, Sparks, Moody Blues, Adam Ant, Morrissey, just to name a few. It was interesting to learn about records that inspired me to make music. I got to read about how he made things happen in the studio and what was going on in his life, the relationship between him and the artist at that time. There was one caption that stood out. I don't know why I think about this, a bit existential, an idea that our universe is just a dingle berry on a dog's ass and that dog's universe is just a tiny dingle berry on someone else's ass. Then I realized that Dr. Seuss books are quite deep for children because the ideas are also about existing. There's the story where the town of "Who-ville" is sitting on spec on a small flower. “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” One night in bed, I was obsessing on this stuff and could not sleep for hours. • Yesterday I watched a rocumentary about Pink Floyd and their classic rock album, The making of The Dark Side of the Moon. What a brilliant album! Roger waters, the songwriter, was talking about something that struck me. About a wake-up call. Maybe this is a wake-up call realizing that I'm waiting for a wake-up call. Anyways, one of my most shocking life realizations was in Hollywood when I was living the life of a hardcore rock n' roller during the 90s. I had realized that life does not start later in life. Life starts at point "A" and happens always. At any point you can take control and guide your own destiny. This was my shocking realization, can use another.

2 March 2010

Berlin, Germany. I've been away for a while but now I'm back with some interesting experiences to write about. But now I'm out of energy and inspiration because I've been fixing this website computer code for hours. So I'll be back with more words another day.

27 January 2010

Malmö, Sweden. Hey I think I got the hang of this page update on the server thing. If you could see what I'm looking at, you'd understand. I'm doing computer programming kinda tech stuff and messing with codes. It's like computer jargin and a mess for most people. • There was this problem with my PA, one of the speakers got busted up from a flight. So its been a pain for months. Until yesterday, finally got it fixed. A sort of Mickey rigged but in a semi pro kinda way so its looking good, works and im happy. • I will be in Gothenburg, Sweden this weekend.

25 January 2010

Malmö, Sweden. It's nice here. The weather, a bit of a chill but the sun shines. I am adicted to chocolate. Better than being addicted to heroine. Was nice to get into town and see friends, familiar faces. I am editing this news insertion directly on the server on a barrowed computer cause I don't have my dreamweaver with me. Let's see how it works.

19 January 2010

Berlin, Germany. In Love Today (For A Little While), the title, a new song I'm working on with a video demo posted at Youtube (below). Here's another rough live version with an explanation of how the song idea came about.

7 January, 2010

Schöneberg, Germany. I am eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. It's the most expensive peanut butter & jelly sandwich I've ever had. I'll tell ya why. And by the way, this is also the best example of ridiculous German bureaucracy I've ever experienced. So, my dear friend Julie in the USA decides to send me a Christmas care package (God bless her). Contents: Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter, Knott's Berry Farm jelly, bag of Snickers bars, hard-to-find US made pens & markers, The Princess Bride DVD, Pez candy dispenser with candies, tin of Altoids, picture frame, greeting card, Cholula Hot Sauce, Del Taco Del Scorcho sauce, mobile phone screen protector, black t-shirt and beanie from Huntington Surf n' Sport. That's the good part. The headache came from the lovely people at Deutsche Post when they red flagged my box and sent it to a fun place called "Zollamt". It's sort of like a customs slash tax office. I can't forget to mention that this place is way on the other side of town and its icy snowy here today. When I got there, couldn't believe all the people waiting in the office for their packages from abroad. Turns out that this lien of mail is a random process by the German government to prove the point that it's illegal to send mail as a "gift" when it's not actually a "gift", or to misleadingly claim value of contents is against the law. This just doesn't make sense. Seems like more money is being spent on the whole process then is being made by randomly taxing and penalizing simple folks trying to retrieve their mail. But in the end after going through my things, the control lady at this office agreed that the package was just a "gift" and sent me on my way without any charges. Thanks Julie.

6 January, 2010

Berlin, Germany. It's just been one of those days today. Glad the day is almost done, one quick entry before I get some z's. This last weekend has been quite interesting. Bulgaria! My first time to the Balkans for a new year's eve party. Thanks to friends and music contact's from working on the ships, I was lucky to visit this place and learn alot in a short time. Although I didn't get much time with buddy Valentin, I was able to explore with Daniela and Rosina, great hosts. Many things I could say about this experience, but in brief, I had an unforgettable time, was fabulous. Fireworks, friends, dancing, culture, history and tasting. • Here's a good quote I found: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain
